1. Cocoa trees and growing conditions
Cocoa growing areas in Vietnam
The cocoa tree is a tropical tree that loves humidity, suitable for growing in areas with hot and humid climates, heavy rain all year round and located in the cocoa belt – the area located 20 degrees north and south of the equator. This is the ideal condition for cocoa to grow, flower and bear fruit.
2. Cacao growing regions in Vietnam
Vietnam is not in the top of the world in terms of cocoa production, but is emerging with high-quality cocoa regions, especially serving the export market and the production of handmade chocolate.
Some typical cocoa regions in Vietnam:
Ben Tre: The “capital” of cocoa in the West, with a humid climate and alluvial soil suitable for cocoa growth. Ben Tre cocoa has a light sour taste, very suitable for making chocolate.
Dak Lak – Dak Nong: Red basalt soil, suitable altitude creates a rich cocoa flavor, balancing sourness, sweetness and bitterness.
Tien Giang, Tra Vinh: These are regions that are growing cocoa intercropped with coconut and fruit trees, bringing high economic value to farmers.
Lam Dong: With cool highland climate conditions, some farms have tested cocoa and achieved good quality.

3. Potential and challenges
Although the area and output of cocoa in Vietnam are still modest, thanks to investment in fermentation and drying processes, Vietnamese cocoa is increasingly asserting its position in the international market.
However, cocoa growers are still facing challenges such as climate change, lack of technical support, and price fluctuations. Therefore, it is necessary to have a sustainable development strategy, improve quality, and link with processing enterprises.
